Abstract

Introduction: Spanish healthcare in terms of human resources is represented by 70% women and has progressively increased in the field of Emergency Medicine. At the same time, inequalities have been identified in terms of gender, which prevent the full professional development of women.

Objective: To identify the existence of a gender gap in Emergency Medicine in Spain.

Methods: An observational research was carried out with a cross-sectional design based on 1000 questionnaires completed by medical, nursing and emergency technicians.

Results: 64.2% of participants identified gender gaps in their workplace. This detection is greater among women (64.3%, p < 0.001). Regarding the detection of inequalities, it was observed that motherhood multiplied by 2 and in those women between 25 and 35 years old it multiplied by 3.5.

Conclusions: Gender gaps were identified in the Emergency Services, predominantly by women. Taking into account its prominence in the health system, more consistent equality policies are needed in Spanish health.
