Abstract

Introduction: Faced with the climate crisis, health systems face two challenges;the work overload of health professionals; and the positioning of health care through prevention.

Objective: To propose a conceptual model that contributes to adaptation and mitigation strategies in the face of the imminent impacts of climate change on the use, usefulness and risk of complementary medicines during the COVID-19 pandemic in some Community Mental Health Centers in Peru.

Methods: The study was exploratory, carried out in different regions of Peru; initially, two exploratory missions to Community Mental Health Centers in the region of Ica and later to La Libertad and Cajamarca. Technical meetings and discussions were held with key health stakeholders. The methodology developed in this "Scoping Phase" was a participatory exposition-dialogue, with a constructivist base (participatory methodology). Data from the Health Information System of the Ministry of Health were also analyzed.

Results: It is highlighted that the lessons learned by CSMCs during the COVID-19 pandemic could have immediate implications for addressing the growing climate crisis, and these are based on the use of complementary therapies.

Conclusions: Society faces the threat of climate change and evidence has shown that current lifestyles and institutional organization should not be maintained, so it becomes relevant to have new approaches that allow us to increase the resilience of our society, protect and restore ecosystems, and in turn maintain economic growth, health and well-being.
