Hyperthyroidism as a Cause of Heart Failure
Keywords:
hyperthyroidism; heart failure; cardiovascular system; thyroid hormoneAbstract
Hyperthyroidism can lead to heart disease because increased thyroid hormone levels produce changes in heart rate, contractility, and relaxation of the heart, which can cause myocardial damage and thus develop ventricular hypertrophy and cardiac dysfunction.
We present the case of a 45-year-old male patient with a history of apparent health who came to the clinic complaining of shortness of breath upon slight exertion, edema in the lower limbs, jugular vein engorgement, and extreme anxiety. He reported a weight loss of 15 kg in 5 months. He was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism as the cause of heart failure. He received treatment with propylthiouracil and propranolol, and the clinical symptoms resolved after 6 months, progressing favorably.
