Characterization of Early Epileptic Seizures in Stroke
Keywords:

Introduction: Early epileptic seizures frequently occur in stroke and constitute one of the most prevalent neurological problems in the Western world.
Objective: To characterize the early epileptic seizures that occur in stroke.
Methods: Ninety medical records of stroke patients discharged from Dr. Carlos Juan Finlay Military Hospital in 2022 were selected. A case-control study was designed to estimate the existence of early epileptic seizures in a population with evolving strokes and its association with different variables.
Results: Early epileptic seizures occurred in 30 stroke patients (33%). Early epileptic seizures predominated in females (70%), in those under 70 years of age (56%), in patients with HTN (93%), in ischemic strokes (90%) and (70%) were partial seizures. In a multivariate logistic regression analysis, a greater association was found between early epileptic seizures and five predictor variables: female sex, white skin color (OR > 1.8), age (OR > 2), embolic stroke, and HTN. (OR > 3) (p < 0.006).
Conclusions: The main predictor variables of early post-stroke epileptic seizures were age < 70 years, female sex, history of arterial hypertension, Caucasian origin and embolic stroke.
