Abstract

Introduction: Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor derived from muscle tissue, which is attached to bones and of unknown cause. It can occur anywhere in the body, usually in the face, neck, extremities and urogenital tract.

Objective: To report the clinical and radiological characteristics of a giant retroperitoneal pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma.

Case report: This was a 79-year-old male patient, who had a tumor mass that occupied the entire left hemiabdomen. When performing imaging studies, a giant retroperitoneal tumor was determined, which was successfully removed by surgery.

Conclusions: Rhabdomyosarcomas are malignant tumors that rarely occur in the elderly; these tumors have a rapid growth that compromises important structures and causes complications in the patient's life.

Keywords: oncologic surgery; rhabdomyosarcoma; retroperitoneal tumors.
