Abstract

Introduction: Acute myeloid leukemias are a group of malignant diseases that are heterogeneous at diagnosis, with high mortality and low cure rates.

Objective: To update the advances and therapeutic approaches to acute myeloid leukemias.

Methods: A literature review was conducted in the PubMed, SciELO, Science Direct and Google Scholar search engine databases, using articles published in the last five years as reference.

Results: Anthracyclines were approved for treatment in 1960, but no new agents were approved until 2000. There have been many attempts to improve complete remission rates and survival rates based on different therapeutic strategies, without demonstrating encouraging results. In 2016, the World Health Organization, in its revised classification based on morphological alterations of immunophenotype, cytogenetic and molecular, defined some as independent entities, and established the use of a risk-adapted therapy, so its discovery has strategically led to the use of new drugs.

Conclusions: With the approval of new agents directed against known genetic and molecular alterations, including noninvasive options, oral presentations, use in monotherapy or combined with the schemes, the so-called personalized therapy and its therapeutic targets were established, which opens a new horizon in the management of the disease.

Keywords: acute myeloid leukemia; therapeutic targets; personalized therapy.
