Abstract

Papillary carcinoma is the most common malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland and presents different histological variants, with varied characteristics. This pathology has a good prognosis. It is characterized by a mass in the cervical region, which presents compressive symptoms, cough and dyspnea. Fine needle aspiration cytology guided by ultrasound is a reliable technique, the nuclear characteristics can be appreciated in the smears to take therapeutic action. This article reports a clinical case of a 37-year-old patient who underwent total thyroidectomy with lymph node dissection. The anatomopathological study revealed a papillary carcinoma. The diagnostic methods, its clinical presentation and its treatment were discussed. The reported patient presented compressive symptoms and a first-order family history of the disease, had a good prognosis due to characteristic histological appearance, did not present extrathyroidal extension or cervical lymph node metastasis.
