Introduction: Prostate cancer is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality from malignant tumors in men in the Caribbean.
Objective: To characterize patients according to risk groups and treatment received.
Methods: An observational, descriptive and longitudinal study was carried out at Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital from 2006 to 2015, with distribution of patients at diagnosis by risk groups according to Partin tables as a predictive model. The x2 non-parametric test (p ≤ 0.05) was applied with 95% confidence interval and survival was estimated using Kaplan Meier curves.
Results: A sample of 803 patients was evaluated, with greater frequency of white skin (46.8%, p = 0.48). Lower urinary symptoms and high-risk (39%) and metastatic (43.3%) groups. The mean age was 67 years (60-79), histological samples with Gleason 7 and greater than or equal to 8 predominated, 58.2% and 37.9%, respectively. Ninety-six percent of the patients were treated with hormonal blockade and external radiation therapy, with progression in 56.8%, and a median overall survival of 96 months.
Conclusions: According to risk groups, high-risk non-metastatic disease and metastatic disease predominated. Sexual dysfunction and hot flashes were identified as the most frequent adverse events with the therapy used. Low survival was estimated in non-metastatic patients in the intermediate risk group with the treatment used.
