Abstract

Introduction: Systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease in which organs, tissues, and cells are damaged by adherence of various antibodies and immune complexes. It rarely presents itself as pericarditis with cardiac tamponade.

Objective: To describe the clinical and laboratory arguments that suggest the diagnostic suspicion of cardiac tamponade secondary to systemic lupus erythematosus.

Case presentation: A 28-year-old female patient was admitted with weakness, joint pain and abdominal pain. She started with fever, shortness of breath, hypotension and sustained tachycardia. Cardiac tamponade secondary to systemic lupus erythematosus was diagnosed. The patient developed pulmonary thromboembolism and died.

Conclusions: Cardiac tamponade is a rare form of presentation of systemic lupus erythematosus and should always be considered as a differential diagnosis of other causes of tamponade in a young patient. The prognosis can be very poor.
