Introduction: Cerebrovascular diseases are a global health problem, constituting the third cause of death and the first cause of disability in adults.
Objective: To characterize patients with cerebrovascular disease.
Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study to characterize patients with cerebrovascular disease admitted to the Internal Medicine Service of the Martin Chang Puga General Teaching Hospital, Nuevitas, from September 2022 to September 2023. The universe was composed of 110 patients, of which 85 were selected who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. A data collection form was used for all patients through the medical history and reports from the center's statistics department.
Results: Male patients predominated (57.6%) with ages between 70 and 79 years (44.7%) and mixed skin (55.3%). More than three-quarters of the patients were hypertensive (75.3%), more than half were smokers (64.7%) and diabetics (56.5%). 81.2% of them suffered from ischemic cerebrovascular disease. Pneumonia was the most frequent complication (48.2%).
Conclusions: The demographic characteristics of the patients with cerebrovascular diseases are similar to those of other series analyzed, and the coincidence in risk factors is also demonstrated. Ischemic factors predominate. Complications reflect the value of measures aimed at preventing and treating cerebral edema and promoting early mobilization. This characterization should lead to the improvement of the diagnostic and treatment protocol for these patients in the institution.
