Introduction: Ankylosing spondylitis is a progressive, systemic, inflammatory disease that affects the joints of the spine, the sacroiliac joints, and adjacent soft tissues, such as tendons and ligaments, thus impacting quality of life.
Objective: To evaluate the health-related quality of life of patients with ankylosing spondylitis and relate it to variables of interest.
Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in the Rheumatology Service of the Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical Surgical Hospital during the period from June 2020 to July 2022. Patients diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis according to the 1984 New York criteria, aged 19 years and older, were included. Patients with incomplete data in the medical history were excluded. The sample consisted of 120 patients.
Results: The average age was 45.0 ± 14.0 years. 63.3% of the patients were male (76.7%) and had white skin color (78.3%) and had human leukocyte antigen B27. Sociodemographic and clinical variables were associated with greater deterioration in health-related quality of life, as well as spinal mobility, functional capacity, and disease activity.
Conclusions: Health-related quality of life was significantly associated with pain, functional capacity, and high inflammatory activity.
Keywords: spondylitis; health-related quality of life; inflammatory activity.
