Los nuevos antibióticos: costosos disparos a ciegas

Abstract

Casi desde el inicio de la era de los an-tibióticos, hace alrededor de tres décadas, de comenzó a hablar no sólo de su empleo, sino también del abuso con que se utiliza en incontables ocasiones, y por numerosas autoridades médicas se ha insistido -en nuestro país y en todo el mundo— sobre los riesgos y el costo del manejo inadecuado de estos agentes antinfecciosos. Se predijo desde entonces lo que efectivamente está ocurriendo en nuestros días: que los antibióticos más efectivos y más baratos se harían a la larga inefectivos contra nu-merosas infecciones, puesto que las inne-cesarias y continuadas exposiciones a las diversas poblaciones bacterianas irían se-leccionando artificialmente a las cepas más resistentes, al disminuir la competencia bio-lógica de las cepas más sensibles.
