Abstract

Introduction: Population aging has become a palpable reality, associated with an increase in the prevalence of older adults with cardiovascular diseases. Problems related to cardiovascular health have a direct impact on quality of life. The evaluation of cardiovascular health is a challenge in clinical practice. Global cardiovascular risk and the ideal cardiovascular health index allow for the identification of vulnerable or higher-risk groups.

Objective: To evaluate cardiovascular health in hospitalized older adults.

Methods: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study of 127 hospitalized older adults. Clinical and metabolic variables were studied, as well as the state of cardiovascular health, through the application of the ideal cardiovascular health index and the stratification of global cardiovascular risk.

Results: Women over 80 years of age predominated; 91,3 % were hypertensive, 46,7 % were overweight/obese, and 70,1 % had low physical activity. An intermediate ideal cardiovascular health index predominated (56,7 %), and 33,9 % presented a high cardiovascular risk.

Conclusions: The evaluation of cardiovascular health in hospitalized older adults constitutes a valuable clinical tool, capable of identifying the state of cardiovascular health in a timely manner. The correlation between better scores and a lower risk of future events supports its predictive utility and use in clinical follow-up.
