Ankle-brachial pressure index in people with type 1 diabetes

Introduction: The natural history of diabetes mellitus includes the development of chronic lesions.
Objective: To describe the relationship among the index of pressures ankle-arm, factors aterogénicos and biochemical parameters in patient with diabetes type 1.
Methods: A descriptive-cross-sectional study was conducted. Methods at the theoretical level and statistical analysis of frequency and percentage were used for qualitative variables. Statistical test: Chi-square or Fisher's exact test to associate qualitative variables. Significance level: p < 0,05.
Results: The predominant groups were women between 30 and 39 years old (61,8 %), asymptomatic patients (97,2 %), hypertensive patients (32,6 %), smokers and ex-smokers (21,5 %), patients with more than 20 years of disease progression (54.2%), poor glycemic control (59,7 %) and glycosylated hemoglobin (41,0 %). According to the ankle-brachial index, 76,4 % were normal, 19,4 % were calcified, and only 4,2 % had peripheral arterial disease. There was no significant association between peripheral arterial disease and microvascular complications, but there was a significant association with coronary artery disease (p < 0.001).
Conclusions: A high index predominated; arterial hypertension and smoking were associated with peripheral arterial disease, and time of onset, and arterial hypertension with calcified arteries. There was no association between a low index and microvascular complications, but there was an association with coronary artery disease.
