Hemodynamic Factors Related to Arterial Stiffness in Apparently Healthy Cuban Adults
Keywords:
apparently healthy adult; cardiovascular diseases; pulse wave velocity; arterial stiffness.Abstract
Introduction: The growing burden of cardiovascular diseases has emphasized the importance of prevention, particularly in apparently healthy individuals, where arterial stiffness emerges as an early subclinical marker of vascular risk. Associated with events such as heart attacks and strokes, it is directly influenced by key hemodynamic parameters: systolic blood pressure, pulse pressure, and pulse wave velocity, which exert mechanical forces on the vascular wall.
Objective: To describe the magnitude of the relationship between selected hemodynamic factors and arterial stiffness in apparently healthy Cuban adults.
Methods: An observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted with 50 presumably healthy adults, randomly selected at the "José Martí" Teaching Polyclinic in Santiago de Cuba, from January 2024 to December 2024.
Results: hemodynamic variables mostly showed normotensive values, though isolated cases of hypotension and possible systolic hypertension were identified. A small percentage exhibited pulse pressure and ankle-brachial index values consistent with arterial stiffness. A positive correlation was observed between pulse pressure and stiffness index (p = 0.058), and a significant negative correlation between right ankle-brachial index and stiffness (p = 0.038). Additionally, systolic and mean blood pressure were significantly associated with carotid intima-media thickness, suggesting a relationship with early vascular changes.
Conclusions: In apparently healthy adults, certain hemodynamic parameters, such as pulse pressure and ankle-brachial index, are associated with subclinical markers of arterial stiffness. Furthermore, blood pressure is related to early signs of vascular remodeling, highlighting its diagnostic value in preclinical stages.
