Abstract

Introduction: Information literacy is crucial for success in doctoral research, yet its development remains uneven in contexts with technological limitations.

Objective: To propose a comprehensive management system to foster information literacy development in doctoral candidates in Educational Sciences at the “José Martí Pérez” University of Sancti Spíritus.

Methods: A quasi-experimental longitudinal study with pre-post measurements of a 12-week pedagogical intervention, involving a cohort of 15 doctoral candidates in Educational Sciences (all practicing physicians) from the aforementioned university. The intervention included workshops on database search techniques, reference management software, Boolean search simulations, and individualized tutoring. Data were collected using a validated multidimensional questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, and observations. Analysis employed the Wilcoxon test and methodological triangulation.

Results: Initially, 86.6 % of participants showed low proficiency in metadata management, and only 13.3 % mastered Boolean operators. Post-intervention, proficiency in specialized terminology rose from 26.7 % to 73.3 %, and Boolean operator usage increased from 13.3 % to 86.6 %. Additionally, 80 % reported improved ethical awareness in source usage.

Conclusions: The comprehensive management system effectively enhanced information literacy skills. Findings underscore the value of context-specific educational interventions tailored to researchers’ unique training needs.
