Abstract

Introduction: The frequency of patients with cognitive alterations related to chronic pain diseases has been increasing in recent years; most studies carried out in Europe demonstrate the close relationship between these variables, also adding other psychological factors.

Objective: To establish whether fibromyalgia is associated with cognitive alterations in adult patients, of both sexes, treated at Hospital I of Florencia de Mora of EsSalud of the social security in Peru and which is located in the north of the country between April and July 2024

Methods: Cross-sectional analytical study, where the sample consisted of 72 people, distributed in two groups, 36 patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia and 36 patients without a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. For the analysis of qualitative variables, the non-parametric Chi-square test was used. A p value less than or equal to 0.05 was considered.

Results: Of 72 adult patients attended, 32 showed evidence of cognitive impairment and 40 did not. Regarding the frequency of cognitive impairment in patients with fibromyalgia was 66.7% and, in patients without fibromyalgia it was 22.2%, performing the comparison, it is observed that if there was significant difference between both groups (p = 0.01) On the other hand, according to the prevalence ratio test (PR) it was determined that patients with fibromyalgia have 2.33 times more prevalence of suffering cognitive impairment (PR = 2.33; 95% CI = 1.19 - 4.59; p = 0.01).

Conclusions: Fibromyalgia is associated with cognitive impairment in adult patients attended at Hospital I de Florencia de Mora of EsSalud. Patients with fibromyalgia have a higher prevalence of cognitive impairment compared to those without fibromyalgia.
