Comparative Analysis of Dengue Control Strategies and Standards in Public Health Technical Regulations in Latin America
Keywords:

Introduction: Dengue is a viral disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, present in tropical and subtropical regions. In Latin America, such as Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia, it has significantly increased. In 2024, Peru had 79,741 cases and 82 deaths up to week 11.
Objective: To compare dengue care guidelines, control strategies, and inequalities in the health response in Peru and other Latin American countries.
Methods: Different technical health standards for the care of patients with dengue were selected; the most recent were conducted in seven Latin American countries, as well as a comparison with the recommendations provided by the Pan American Health Organization.
Results: Eight Latin American guidelines were reviewed and compared with other guidelines from Asia. Furthermore, it was identified that most of the reviewed guidelines share key characteristics, including operational definitions, case reporting protocols, health coverage guidelines, promotion measures, health education, and communication-dissemination and community strategies.
Conclusions: Technical standards for dengue control in Latin America were analyzed, revealing similarities and differences influenced by local contexts. A need to update and improve access to these guidelines was identified, as their limited availability affects the response process. The findings underscore the importance of tailored and transparent interventions to optimize dengue control.
