Introduction: CBC parameters can help doctors identify patients with poor prognosis and make decisions at an early stage to determine those who require intensive care.
Objective: To evaluate the hematological and clinical variables associated with lethality due to severe COVID-19, during the first wave of infection in a patient population in Chiclayo, Peru.
Methods: A retrospective analytical cross-sectional study was carried out to evaluate the hematological and clinical variables associated with lethality due to COVID-19 in 192 patients using binary logistic regression.
Results: Oxygen saturation, platelet distribution width and plateletcrit were associated with lethality. The ratio between neutrophils and lymphocytes had statistical association with lethality, but was clinically irrelevant.
Conclusions: Hematological and clinical variables were evaluated. Platelet indices were associated with fatality from severe COVID-19. These platelet indices, together with oxygen saturation, could help predict the prognosis of this disease.
