Rheumatological Manifestations in Crohn's Disease

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, idiopathic disease that affects the gastrointestinal tract. Its two main forms are Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Among its complications are rheumatological conditions, which are divided into four categories: peripheral arthritis, spondylitis (with or without sacroiliitis), isolated sacroiliitis, and a fourth, less common category. Peripheral arthritis is the most frequent (5-30%) of them. The onset of arthritis is usually simultaneous with or after the gastrointestinal manifestations. It is worth noting that less than 10% of patients with spondyloarthropathies will develop definitive IBD.
