Abstract

Introduction: When oral cavity cancer is early detected, the person has the possibility of surviving five years after diagnosis.

Objective: To determine the overall survival at five years of follow-up of patients with cancer in the floor of the mouth.

Methods: A descriptive, longitudinal study was carried out at Conrado Benítez Oncology Hospital in the period from January 1, 2010 to December 30, 2020. A random sample of 51 patients with cancer in the floor of the mouth was selected. Descriptive statistical techniques were used for the analysis. 95% confidence intervals were automated and the chi-square test of independence was applied.

Results: Thirteen deaths were recorded; the highest percentage was in stage III (38.5%). The average survival rate was 84.3 months, with estimated overall survival rate at five years of follow-up of 67.8%.

Conclusions: The overall survival rate of patients with floor of the mouth cancer in the study population was high, which could be associated with the clinical diagnosis in early stages of the disease.
