Abstract

Introduction: Chronic kidney disease is associated with high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

Objectives: To evaluate the cardiovascular risk associated with chronic kidney disease.

Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of adults at the Policlínico Plaza, from March to April 2023. The sample was estimated by 1036 subjects and stratified random sampling was selected. A clinical evaluation and tests of albuminuria, creatinine, cholesterol, triglycerides were performed. Cardiovascular risk was estimated, prevalence was calculated, and independence tests and analysis of variance were used.

Results: One thousand and forty-two subjects were studied, 56.9% were 60 years of age or older; 44.1% were hypertensive and 16.7% were diabetic. Albuminuria was present in 9.3%. 50.7% of hypertensive patients had normal blood pressure. Patients with greater renal functional impairment had a higher cardiovascular risk. According to health guidelines, moderate-severe risk was higher in patients with chronic kidney disease when compared to subjects without it (58.3% vs. 30%), p = 0.00.

Conclusions: Cardiovascular risk is elevated in patients with chronic kidney disease. Half of hypertensive patients had control of their blood pressure levels. The presence of albuminuria was related to: older age, high systolic blood pressure levels, hypertriglyceridemia, renal functional impairment and diabetes mellitus.

Keywords: chronic kidney disease; albuminuria; risk factor.
