Introduction: Lung cancer is the most common malignant tumor in adults and can affect one or more lung lobes.
Objective: To characterize adult patients with suspected lung neoplasia according to the bronchoscopic result.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Pulmonology Service at Arnaldo Milián Castro Clinical Surgical Hospital from January 2018 to December 2020. The population consisted of 305 patients who underwent bronchoscopy. An intentional sample of 208 subjects was selected using non-probabilistic sampling according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Analysis of individual medical records and descriptive statistics were used.
Results: The mean age was 63.94 ± 8.5 and the age group 60-69 years was representative with 67 (37%) patients. Men were the most prevalent totaling 126 (60.6%) and active smokers were 133 (63.9%). The most frequent initial symptom in them was cough with 82 (39.4%). Endobronchial lesions predominated in 89 (42.8%) patients and peripheral location in 111 (53.4%). Adenocarcinoma (37.5%) and squamous cell carcinoma (31.7%) were the most frequent histological varieties.
Conclusions: In the study, higher frequency of patients aged between 60 and 69 years and active smokers was observed. Higher number of tumors were diagnosed with bronchial brushing. The tumor location was correlated with histology.
