Introduction: Alzheimer's disease is a complex, neurodegenerative entity and represents the most common form of dementia.
Objective: To describe the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of patients with Alzheimer's disease in Villa Clara province.
Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in 100 patients evaluated in the Provincial Consultation of Cognitive Impairment at Arnaldo Milián Castro Hospital in Villa Clara. Sociodemographic and clinical variables were studied. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed for each variable, in a frequency distribution, mean and standard deviation. To determine whether the sample data were representative of the population, Pearson's chi-square goodness-of-fit test was applied, considering statistically significant the probability of occurrence ≤ 0.05.
Results: 62.0% of the patients were female and 74.0% were over 70 years old. Subjects with white skin and from urban areas prevailed. The most frequent personal history was arterial hypertension (59.0%). The cognitive evaluation showed that 62.0% of the patients were in the “mild stage” category (ADAS-Cog), the functional and affective assessment showed that 66.0% of the patients were independent in carrying out basic activities in their daily life, and only 16.0% showed minor depression.
Conclusions: Alzheimer's disease prevailed in white-skinned women over 70 years old. Hypertensive patients in the mild stage of the disease with independent performance in the resolution of basic activities of daily life predominated.
