Abstract

Introduction: Stroke or cerebrovascular accident is one of the main causes of morbidity, disability and mortality worldwide.

Objective: Identify risk factors associated with stroke in hypertensive patients

Methods: An analytical observational case-control study was carried out in hypertensive patients belonging to the Ramon Lopez Peña polyclinic in the period from January 2022 to December 2023. A minimum sample of 468 patients (156 cases and 312 controls) was estimated. Stroke was studied as a dependent variable and age, sex, and risk factors as independent variables. For the comparison between cases and controls, Pearson's Chi square and its level of statistical significance were calculated.

Results: There was a predominance of the male sex for 52.4% in the age group of 70 years and over. In the bivariate analysis, age, smoking addiction, sedentary lifestyle, atrial fibrillation, uncontrolled arterial hypertension and ischemic heart disease were associated with the risk of developing the disease. The risk factors with the greatest impact were smoking addiction and uncontrolled arterial hypertension with an attributable risk in percentage exposure of 66.4 and 24.05 respectively.

Conclusions: Smoking addiction and uncontrolled arterial hypertension were the modifiable risk factors that had the greatest association and impact on the appearance of Stroke in the health area.
