Introduction: Survival analysis is a set of statistical procedures for data analysis. The best-known methods that allow censoring in survival are Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards model.
Objective: To describe the concepts of survival analysis and the different approaches
used for the analysis of the time elapsed until the occurrence of a certain event.
Methods: A bibliographic review of the main articles published in PubMed, Hinari, SciELO, and Google Scholar databases was carried out, 22 articles met the selection criteria.
Results: The tables and graphs presented are original, generated with IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 22.0 software, based on data from a cohort of 689 kidney transplant patients, performed during the period 1985-2019 in the Nephrology Service at Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical Surgical Hospital. In order to present the examples in the calculations, all kidney transplant patients were used. Kaplan Meier methods, the Log Rank calculation and Cox regression were presented, all were performed with a 95% confidence interval and an α of 0.05.
Conclusions: Survival analysis has been consolidated as crucial research methodology in the medical field, so the observation time is important. Among the statistical models that allow estimating the time of occurrence of a phenomenon in a given population is survival analysis.
Keywords: survival; survival analysis; Kaplan-Meier; Cox.
