Introduction: Chronic HIV/AIDS infection poses a multidimensionally complex scenario and a healthcare challenge.
Objective: To characterize a group of people with chronic HIV infection.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out on 198 individuals with chronic HIV infection followed in Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital protocol from January 2009 to December 2021. Sociodemographic variables related to the history and control of the infection, comorbidities and risk factors were characterized. Central tendency type summary measures were used for variables. To identify association, the Chi square test was used.
Results: The male gender was 82.3%, average age was 45 years, 81.8% had educational level ranging from technical secondary to university, 89.4% had a family support network. 39% had some toxic habit. 57% with more than 1 comorbidity, including: high blood pressure (29%), metabolic syndrome (11%) and psychiatric illness (10%). Relationship p < 0.01 was evident between the prevalence of comorbidities and age groups from 30 to 69 years of age. No relationship was found between the greater predisposition of comorbidities and gender.
Conclusions: The behavior of chronic HIV/AIDS infection among individuals treated in Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital protocol shows the complex scenario described for the chronicity of this disease.
