Mild Cognitive Impairment Amnesic Subtype in Diabetic Older Adults
Keywords:
older adult, diabetes Mellitus, mild cognitive impairment.Abstract
Introduction: Recently the world population has undergone a transformation, driven by marked global aging. As humans age, non-communicable diseases appear. These conditions include diabetes mellitus and mild cognitive impairment. Both generally produce a disabling state of health for the elderly.
Objective: To determine the association between diabetes and amnestic mild cognitive impairment in older adults.
Methods: An observational, analytical and retrospective case-control study was carried out in the period from January to July 2023. The study population consisted of 182 older adults living in this community, 38 of them were chosen as cases, with a diagnosis of amnestic mild cognitive impairment according to the Petersen criteria. Two controls were selected for each case, 76 older adults, with approximately the same characteristics as the case. The strength of association of each risk factor was specified.
Results: A significant association was found between amnestic mild cognitive impairment and diabetic older adults with more than 20 years of disease evolution. Those over 30 years old have 4.93 times the risk. It occurred with greater association in those who are on combined medications.
Conclusions: There is a statistically significant association between amnestic mild cognitive impairment and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Risks get higher as subjects age, the disease evolves and the use of combined treatment for glycemic control.
