Abstract

Introduction: Choledochal cysts are dilatations of the intra, extrahepatic, or both bile ducts and they are rare. The classic clinical triad is jaundice, palpable abdominal mass, and abdominal pain.

Objective: To report a case of choledochal cyst.

Case report: This is a 56-year-old woman with a history of arterial hypertension and cholecystectomy. She went to Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital due to abdominal pain in the epigastrium and right hypochondrium. A physical examination was performed and she presented conjunctival jaundice, soft abdomen that was tender to palpation in the upper right quadrant, Murphy's sign, no palpable masses, no peritoneal irritation, or visceromegaly. Magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen showed a dilated common bile duct measuring 76 x 52 mm, thin walls, multiple hypointense images inside, with no signal, and other heterogeneous images, related to stones. The diagnosis was type III choledochocele, which was confirmed after surgical resection. The evolution was favorable.

Conclusion: The case was reported to expand scientific knowledge in this area, due to the rarity of this condition.

Keywords: cyst; common bile duct; choledochocele.
