Keywords:

Introduction: Osteoporosis is common in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and increases the morbidity and mortality of the disease.
Objective: To determine the frequency of osteoporosis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and associated factors.
Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in 1330 patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, treated at Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical Surgical Hospital, from January 2020 to August 2022, with a final sample of 518 patients. A univariate analysis was performed to detect variables associated with osteoporosis and a multivariate analysis to detect predictive factors of osteoporosis in the study.
Results: Osteoporosis occurred in 188 patients (36.3%). Univariate analysis: the presence of osteoporosis was associated with the age of the patients (older) (p = 0.004) and smoking (p = 0.041). Multivariate analysis: age 61 to 70 years [(p = 0.002, OR = 1.441 (1.117-6.479)], white skin color [(p = 0.025, OR = 1.222 (1.083-9.877)] and history of non-traumatic fractures [(p = 0.021, OR = 1.442 (1.097-7.881)] were identified as predictive factors for osteoporosis.
Conclusions: Osteoporosis is common in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. In their follow-up there are variables that should be considered towards a possible modification regarding prevention and timely diagnosis of osteoporosis.
