Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in Patients with Multiple Myeloma
Keywords:

Introduction: Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is part of the advances in the treatment of patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma in recent years.
Objective: To evaluate the results of autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in patients with multiple myeloma.
Methods: A descriptive, retrospective and cohort study was carried out, forming a sample of 15 patients treated in the Hematology Service at Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical Surgical Hospital from November 2009 to November 2019.
Results: The average age was 54.67 years; 53.3% were male and all debuted in Durie-Salmon stage III. As conditioning for the transplant, 67.7% received high doses of melphalan at doses of 200 mg/m2. Cytopenias and gastrointestinal toxicity were the most common complications (93.3%). The recovery of neutrophil and platelet numbers occurred on average after 11 days, only two patients died (13.3%) and 13 (86.7%) are in complete remission with a probability of overall survival at 5 years, 77.8%.
Conclusions: Transplantation of autologous hematopoietic stem cells with the use of high doses of melphalan as conditioning in patients with multiple myeloma is a feasible procedure with a relatively low mortality and demonstrates that its inclusion in the treatment of patients considerably improves their survival expectations.
