Subjective Aspects of Quality of Life in Older Adults
Keywords:
older adult, quality of life, self-esteem.Abstract
Introduction: The subjective aspects of quality of life are built from the appreciation and assessment that the person makes of themselves, their meaning of life and their place in the world.
Objective: To describe subjective aspects of quality of life in older adults.
Methods: A bibliographic search was carried out at the University of Medical Sciences in Camagüey, the period from March to April 2023 was taken into account. The review was carried out in Scopus, SciELO, DOAJ and LILACS databases. The descriptors of older adult, quality of life and self-esteem were used. Original articles and reviews published in the last 5 years were analyzed; thirty articles met the selection criteria.
Results: The desire for intimacy is not considered inappropriate nor does it decrease with age, while in the emotional sphere, older adults experience anguish, sadness, fear, helplessness, hopelessness and isolation. On the other hand, the insecurity felt can constitute a fear of being a victim of acts of violence. Likewise, personal productivity is affected by the aging process itself, which limits remaining independent. Finally, perceived health as an indicator of health status may constitute a predictor of mortality.
Conclusions: Among the subjective aspects of quality of life in older adults are intimacy, emotional expression, felt security, personal productivity and perceived health. These elements must be attended to in a timely manner and positively reinforced to maintain an acceptable quality of life.
